Chart 6: Pupils registered for free school meals, by ethnic background, September 2002

bar chart

While numbers in some ethnic background groups are too small for conclusions to be made, the proportion of pupils registered with free school meal entitlement ranges from 45 per cent ( Gypsies & Travellers) to six per cent ( Asian-Chinese). Asian Indian, Asian-Bangladeshi, Asian-Other, and White-Other all have below average rates of registration.

The same ranking is used in Chart 6, which shows that, whilst on average 17 per cent of pupils attend schools which have the highest levels of free meal registration, all minority ethnic groups other than Asian-Chinese and Mixed, were more highly represented in such schools. Furthermore, in comparison with the registration rates among ethnic minorities shown in Chart 5, the rates in Chart 6 are even higher in all minority ethnic groups other than Gypsies & Travellers and Mixed.

Chart 7: Ethnic background of pupils in the 20 per cent of mainstream schools with highest percentage of pupils registered for free school meals, September 2002.
