The proportion of pupils who are female remains constant at 49 per cent up to S4, in line with figures for the general population. In S5 and S6 girls become the majority with 51 per cent and 53 per cent respectively, reflecting greater staying-on rates.
There are about twice as many boys as girls in special schools.

The usual arrangements for pupils entering P1 are that children whose 5th birthday falls between 1 March and 28 February start school together in the August in the middle of that period. Entry under the statutory entry age, or deferred entry are also possible.
