Indicators of Progress 2003

Milestone 23: Reducing the fear of crime among older people

The information used to measure progress against this milestone is taken from the Scottish Crime Survey (SCS) which is run by the Scottish Executive. Information from the 2003 Scottish Crime Survey is expected to be available in spring 2004.

Fear of crime

The results from the SCS indicate that older people's worries about being a victim of housebreaking and physical assault decreased over the course of the 1990s. The results also indicate that older women are more likely to be worried about these crimes than older men.

Urban Rural analysis

The results from the Scottish Household Survey (SHS) for 2002 indicate that older people's worries about being a victim of housebreaking, physical assault on the street and car theft vary between urban and rural areas. Older people in urban areas are more likely to be worried about these crimes than older people in rural areas. The Scottish Executive core definition of rurality is used which classifies settlements of 3,000 or less people to be rural.
