ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE IN SCOTLAND - IMPLEMENTING THE ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE STRATEGY
6. AIMING FOR SUCCESS
During the 10 year life of the Strategy we expect to see step changes in animal health and welfare activity particularly in terms of outcomes such as best practice in disease prevention and uptake of animal health plans. To inform the ongoing management of the Strategy it will be important that we measure progress. Indicators to measure success are being developed on the basis of the Strategy's Vision, and will be published as part of the revised Implementation Plan in 2004.
However, whilst these indicators and related targets have yet to be agreed we can point to the type of outcomes we expect the Strategy to deliver to Scotland:
Enhanced biosecurity practice and standards with particular emphasis on bringing new animals on to farms;
Greater linkages between the science base and animal keepers and associated technology transfer;
Awareness of animal disease contingency planning and widespread participation in exercises;
Recognition of Scotland's animal health and welfare standards and the contribution to quality product;
Support for industry viability.
Achieving our Vision of enhanced animal health and welfare performance will depend on close working between Government, industry, welfare organisations, the scientific community and the veterinary profession but
success is ultimately in the hands of animals keepers.
