EDUCATION AND SCHOOLS IN SCOTLAND - KEY FACTS

There are almost 3,000 publicly funded schools in Scotland (run by 32 local authorities).

About 2,300 of these are primary schools, nearly 400 are secondary schools and about 200 are special schools. There are also over 100 independent schools

Over 86% of 3 year olds and 95% of 4 year olds attend pre-school education.

There are over 410,000 pupils and nearly 23,000 teachers at primary schools.

There are almost 320,000 pupils and over 25,000 teachers at secondary schools.

There are nearly 8,000 pupils and over 2,000 teachers at special schools.

By 2013, the number of primary pupils is predicted to fall by around 16% and the number of secondary pupils by around 15%.

The average attendance levels are about 95% in primary schools and 89% in secondary schools

About 91% of S4 pupils gained 5 or more Standard Grade qualifications (or equivalent).

About 23% of the previous year's (2000/2001) S4 pupils gained 3 or more Highers at grades A-C in S5.

Local authorities spend roughly 3 billion in total on education.
