Maths and English Class Sizes in S1 and S2, September 2003

Information on the size of S1 and S2 Maths and English classes as at September 2003 is published today by the Scottish Executive Education Department.

The main findings are :-

• The average Maths class size was 26 in S1 and 25 in S2.
• The average English class size was 26 both in S1 and in S2 classes.
• Twelve per cent of S1 and S2 pupils were taught in Maths classes of 20 or fewer. Twenty per cent were taught in classes of over thirty.
• Eight per cent of S1 and S2 pupils were taught in English classes of 20 or fewer. Twelve per cent were taught in classes of over thirty.

NOTES TO NEWS EDITORS

1. These figures represent a snapshot of schools as at School Census week (i.e. week commencing 8 ^th September 2003). Information was collected in a special exercise and was received from all bar four schools. Information on primary class sizes will be published as part of the school census in Spring 2004.
