Exclusion From Schools In Scotland: Guidance to Education Authorities Authorities Circular 8/03
Section 5: Self-evaluation and audit |
- In auditing their own practice with regard to the use of exclusion, education authorities and schools should have regard to legislative requirements and policy intention in relation to exclusion and protection of vulnerable pupils. They should also have regard to the various aspects of good practice (current principles of good practice are referred to in Annexes A and B of this Circular).
- Schools should collect and analyse data on the pattern of exclusions within the school, not only to identify patterns in respect of individual pupils, but also to identify patterns which indicate the need for targeted support or review of practice. Such focus may be required in the case of particular departments within the school, particular members of staff, or in relation to aspects of the school's organisation and management. Following on from such auditing, education authorities and schools should take active steps to address any issues so revealed, for example through continuing professional development, additional guidance or targeted management support.
