Management and Maintenance

The Executive ensures that the trunk road network is managed and maintained to appropriate standards. Day-to-day work involves among other things the inspection, maintenance and repair of the road surface, bridges, drains and lighting together with grass cutting, road sweeping and salting and snow clearing required to ensure that traffic can continue to flow safely.

Procurement of 3rd Generation Term Maintenance Contracts for Management and Maintenance of the Scottish Trunk Road Network (North West Unit and South West Unit) is now underway. A list of organisations who requested a Prequalification Prospectus and Candidate's Prequalification Questionnaire is listed here.

Improvement

The Executive has a responsibility to bring forward improvements to the network and are delivering a programme based on the outcome of the Strategic Roads Review, the M74 completion and the Central Scotland Transport Corridor Study. In addition to major schemes arising from this programme, Scottish Ministers also fund a series of local improvements.

Road Safety

A trunk road Accident Investigation and Prevention (AIP) Unit undertakes an annual review to identify accident black-spots and organises appropriate improvement works where such sites are found.

Traffic and Congestion

Real time information on traffic conditions is available to drivers through the National Driver Information and Control System (NADICS) via roadside variable message signs and its website www.nadics.org.uk which provides roadside information and journey planning advice.

Traffic Data & Statistics

The Executive funds an extensive network of traffic counters to collect traffic data and to allow statistics to be compiled.

Environmental Issues

Long term maintenance plans have been developed to ensure the ecological and environmental integrity of the trunk road estate through the Trunk Road Biodiversity Action Plan. All improvements and new roads require to undergo rigorous environmental assessment procedures.

Standards

Scottish Ministers support national standards set out in the National Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and also publish individual guidance on topics such as landscape and environmental treatment, design approach for more lightly trafficked trunk roads, provision for cyclists, etc.

Planning / Development

Planning Authorities are required to consult with the Executive on planning applications which are likely to affect the operation of a trunk road. Guidance has been produced for such major and minor developments.
