Part-Time Firefighters

We are grateful to the members of the Advisory Group who provided input and offered advice as required, and members of the Fire Service who agreed to participate in discussions undertaken during this programme of research.
The research was conducted during a period of industrial unrest within the fire service, which involved some national strike action. This less than ideal environment did influence one or two respondents but, did not, in the researchers' view, have any significant impact. The outcome of the employer and employee agreement that concluded the industrial action is that part-time firefighters' conditions of employment will be receiving further attention and, secondly, their contribution received higher recognition at a national level. This research has therefore coincided with a period of unprecedented change for the fire service.
