Civil Aviation

The safety and regulation of aviation is a matter reserved to the UK Government.

The Executive, however, engages with colleagues in the UK Government, the European Commission and other stakeholders, on the implementation and development of policies which have implications for air transport in Scotland.

The Scottish Executive and the UK's Department for Transport are currently engaged in a major consultation process aimed at developing polices for the future direction of air transport in Scotland and the UK for the next 30 years.

The Scottish Executive also supports athe £6.8 million Interim Routes Development Fund aimed at increasing the development of more direct air services serving Scotland for the benefit of business, inward investment and inbound tourism.

Highlands and Islands Air Services

Scottish Ministers own HIAL, which operates 10 airports in the Highlands & Islands (Barra, Benbecula, Campbeltown, Inverness, Islay, Kirkwall, Stornoway, Sumburgh, Tiree and Wick).

Funding of these airports ensures the continuation of safe and efficient operations at these airports and allows airport charges for domestic flights to be contained at acceptable levels so that. This enables scheduled servicescan to continue to serve the local communities.
