Measuring Deprivation in Scotland: Developing a Long-term Strategy
Contractor: Scottish Centre for Research on Social Justice
Due date: July 2003
Contact: Ailie Clarkson [0131 244 0566]
Project to make recommendations for developing a long-term strategy for measuring deprivation in Scotland. Considers the definition and conceptual basis for measuring deprivation, how the term relates to others such as poverty, social exclusion, social inclusion or social justice, how area-based measures of deprivation might be developed, building on the 2003 Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation, and explores approaches to measuring deprivation for particular social groups (such as children, young people or the elderly). An interim report designed to stimulate wider discussion of these issues and feedback as part of the research process was released in May 2003. For more information and INTERIM REPORT, click here.

Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics ( www.sns.gov.uk) provides a range of information relevant to social justice and areas regeneration issues.
