SCOTTISH TRANSPORT STATISTICS No 22 - 2003 Edition

ERRORS IN THE PREVIOUS EDITION

This list covers errors which occurred in the preparation of the tables or the commentary in "Scottish Transport Statistics". It does not include cases where the statistics now published differ from those in the previous edition, because they have been revised by whoever supplied the figures. Such revisions could occur following more information becoming available, or an improvement in estimation methodology, or the correction of errors in the supplier's own systems. In such cases, the revisions may be mentioned in the text or a footnote to the relevant table, if they are large enough to warrant this.

We apologise for the following errors, which we have found in the previous edition:

  • Summary: the relatively few comparisons of "per head" figures for Scotland and the UK were incorrect, as the UK "per head" figures were wrongly calculated using GB (and not UK) populations
  • Summary: paragraph 2.8, line 2 (on rail passenger journeys) should have said "… in 2001-02 …" (not "… in 2000-01 …").
  • Table 1.4 gave the number of private hire cars in Aberdeenshire as 1,402 for 2001. A survey in 2003 reported the figure as 121. We do not have a corrected figure for 2001, but it will be nearer the 2003 figure of 121 than 1,402.
  • Tables 1.15 and 1.17 were produced from the version of the Scottish Household Survey analysis database for 2001 that was available when the figures for the tables were extracted. It was subsequently found that this did not contain the data for several hundred households, and that some households had been allocated to the wrong "urban/rural" categories. As a result, many of the figures in these tables were wrong - but, generally, by no more than a couple of percentage points. More detailed tables on the same topics were produced from a corrected version of the database, and published in the statistical bulletin "Household Transport in 2001 …" in December 2002.
  • Table 2.6 gave the RPI figure for 1999-2000 as 111.3 - it should have been 111.6
  • Table 4.1: the "average tolls" for 2001 were wrongly calculated - they excluded from the denominator exempt vehicles (which should have been included).
  • Chapter 11, commentary, paragraph 2.9 referred to figures for 2001-02 which were not shown in table 11.8. These figures now appear in this edition.
  • Table 11.10 showed RPI figures for 2001, supplied by the Office for National Statistics, which wrongly related to March 2002 (they should have been averages for 2001).
  • Tables 12.7, 12.8, 12.9, 12.13, 12.14 and 12.15 were produced from an incorrect version of the Scottish Household Survey analysis database - please see the comments (above) on Tables 1.15 and 1.17.

Where appropriate, the tables in this edition include corrected figures.

Any problems or inconveniences resulting from these errors are regretted.
