1. Due to a change in the calculation of 'residual life' of roads, the additional category of 'reconstructed' (a form of strengthening) was added in 1996-97
2. The area and length of each type of treatment has previously been calculated from annual financial returns and an assumed carrageway width.
However the figures used now come from the Scottish Executive Payment Management System and are based on actual figures rather than estimates.
This is the first edition to give figures on the new basis. They have been revised from 1996-97, the earliest that such data are available.
