THE SPEEDING DRIVER: WHO, HOW AND WHY?

Active crash in last 3 years

10.33 The tables in this Section collate together characteristics of each of the types of Active accident reported by all those drivers reporting details on one crash in the past three years and the first crash of those reporting two or three. Table 10.21 shows the details of the 3 reports of hitting a pedestrian, one of which was already seen in Table 10.20.

10.34 All took place in dry conditions on 30mph roads. The police came to know about all three, even the one case where no-one was injured.

10.35 Table 10.22 summarises the 10 cases where the driver reported they had left the road onto a verge of field.

10.36 Overall, as Table 10.8 reports two-thirds (65%) of all the crashes reported by own respondents took place under 'Dry' conditions, yet only 30% (3 in 10) of crashes involving drivers leaving the road were in the dry and they involved a 23 year old male, a 47 year old male and a 68 year old female. Three of the 10 of the reported crashes that took place under frosty or icy conditions (Table 10.8) appear here, involving an 18 year old male, a 37 year old female, and a 72 year old female. One suspects different driving styles were involved.

10.37 Nine of the ten crashes took place on 60mph roads, and the other in a 50mph zone. 7 of the 10 crashes involved high mileage drivers (driving above 12,000 miles per annum). The 18 year old male was in the medium mileage group and the 68 year old female was on the cusp of the low mileage group (though the 72 year old female reported driving 45,000 miles pa!). Someone was injured in 3 of the 10 cases, and the police came to know of 9 of these 10 crashes. Three young males (18-23 years) but no young females were involved in these loss of control crashes.

10.38 Table 10.23 summarises the 7 cases where the driver hit a non-sentient obstacle - a lamp post, tree or wall.

10.39 At least five of the 7 cases involved male drivers and 4 of the 7 involved high-mileage drivers. Six of the 7 occurred in the earlier part of the day (midnight to 1pm). Only 2 of the 7 happened in the dry.

10.40 Table 10.24 summarises the 20 reported cases where the driver hit a vehicle that was stationery.

10.41 Almost twice as many cases of hitting a stationary vehicle involved male as opposed to female drivers (13:7). Twelve took place in dry conditions, 8 in various degrees of rain. Three-quarters (15) took place in 30mph zones and the police came to know of only 4 of the cases. No persons were injured. Half these crashes happened to high mileage drivers.
