Good animal health planning improves on-farm animal health and welfare and contributes to farm profitability.

Biosecurity is more than cleansing and disinfecting: it includes, for example, the prudent sourcing of stock, quarantine, testing and vaccination.

Biosecurity is the responsibility of everybody - it means ways in which farmers, other owners of farm animals, and people who live, work, visit and enjoy the countryside can significantly reduce the risk of disease occurring or spreading to other animals.

SAC, SEERAD and SQA are developing a study unit for students, farmers and all those employed in agriculture, environment and agri-supply industries.

The HN unit - available in the 2003-2004 academic year will cover:

  • What is biosecurity?

  • Health implications of livestock disease

  • Control and prevention - animal health planning

  • Legislative requirements

  • Animal disease emergency preparedness

The unit can be studied in a variety of ways and will be a nationally recognised award accredited by SQA.

Tailored training packages will be available from SAC from early 2004.
