Statistics on Students in Higher Education in Scotland: 2001-02 are published today on the Scottish Executive website. These figures expand on the Students in Higher Education Institutions in Scotland, 2001-02 News Release, published on 20 th March 2003 which has been updated to include information on HE provision in Further Education Colleges.
The main points are as follows:
- In 2001/02 there were 272,627 higher education students in Scotland, an increase of 4 per cent on the previous year. This number is 34 per cent higher than the corresponding number of higher education students in Scotland in 1994/95.
- In 2001/02 76 per cent of higher education students studied in Higher Education Institutions while 24 per cent studied in Further Education Colleges.
- Between 1994/95 and 2001/02 the number of female higher education students increased by 55 per cent to 151,212. Over the same period the number of male higher education students increased by 15 per cent to 121,415. Female students represented 55 per cent of all higher education students in 2001/02 compared to 48 per cent in 1994/95.
- Between 1994/05 and 2001/02 the number of full-time higher education students increased by 18 per cent to 170,320. Over the same period the number of part-time higher education students increased by 73 per cent to 102,307. 2001/02 was the first year in which the number of part-time higher education students exceeded 100,000.
- Between 1994/95 and 2001/02 the number of higher education students aged 25+ as a proportion of all higher education students grew from 37 per cent to 45 per cent. For all age groups the growth in the number of female students was higher than that for males over the period.
- There were 141,447 entrants to higher education in Scotland in 2001/02. This is the highest recorded number of entrants in a single year. In 2001/02 there were over 40,000 more higher education entrants than in 1994/95, which was the last year in which the number was under 100,000.

NOTES TO NEWS EDITORS
1. These statistics are collected by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and, for data prior to 1998-99, by the (former) Scottish Office Education and Industry Department (SOEID) from Further Education Colleges (FECs). The Scottish Further Education Funding Council (SFEFC) has the responsibility to collect data from FECs - from the academic year 1998-99 onwards.
2. This news release contains information on students from both FECs and HEIs who are attending Higher Education courses in Scotland. Higher Education courses are defined as those at HND/HNC level and above.
3. This release gives data for a number of years to allow trends to be identified more easily. In doing this, some data has been re-classified, and so may no longer agree with previously published data. Where this is the case, this news release should be assumed to supersede any previous publications.
4. The Scottish Age Participation Index (API) has not been included in this publication this year. In the past this publication was regularly published later in the year at a time when finalised API data is available. Now that the timetable for this publication has been brought forward, finalised API data will henceforth be published in the Scottish Executive National Statistics Publication Standard Tables On Higher & Further Education In Scotland. This year's edition is due to be published on Thursday 17 July 2003.
