England and Wales
Overarching Aims and Objectives for the CJS:
Aims -
- To reduce crime and the fear of crime; and
- To dispense justice fairly and efficiently and to promote confidence in the rule of law.
Objectives -
- To reduce the level of crime and disorder
- To reduce the adverse impact of crime and disorder on people's lives
- To reduce the economic costs of crime
- To ensure just processes and just and effective outcomes
- To deal with cases throughout the criminal justice process with appropriate speed
- To meet the needs of victims, witnesses and jurors within the system
- To respect the rights of defendants and treat them fairly
- To promote confidence in the criminal justice system

Northern Ireland
Overarching Purpose and Aims of the CJS:
Purpose - To support the administration of justice, to promote confidence in the criminal justice system, and to contribute to the reduction of crime and the fear of crime.
Aims -
- To provide an independent, fair and effective criminal justice system for the community
- To work together to help reduce crime and the fear of crime
- To make the criminal justice system as open, inclusive and accessible as possible, and promote confidence in the administration of justice
- To improve service delivery by enhancing levels of effectiveness, efficiency and co-operation within the criminal justice system.

Sweden
The overarching goal for the criminal justice system is to reduce crime and increase the security of the people. All activities should be undertaken from a citizen perspective and the time from when a crime is reported to when a sentence is passed and the sentence is carried out shall be reduced.
