3 Ownership of vacant and derelict land
3.1 Table 6 shows ownership of vacant and derelict sites, including a comparison of data from 1996 and 2002. For those sites where ownership was known, there is a balance between public and private ownership For derelict land, single private ownership is most significant (75 per cent in 2002, compared with 61 per cent in 1996). In 2002, 7 per cent of vacant or derelict land where ownership was known was in multiple ownership. 1,971 hectares of land (18 per cent of the total amount of vacant and derelict land recorded in 2002) had one or more unknown owners.
