Annex Four: Compiling the list of Lenders

INVESTIGATION OF COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF LENDERS IN SCOTLAND

A4.1 A search for mortgage lenders was conducted using the list of CML (Council of Mortgage Lenders) members and associates as a starting point. Firstly, the internet site www.yourmortgage.co.uk was interrogated. The list of all available mortgages on this site was examined in order to find lenders not present on the CML list. Further to this, the lists of lenders contained in 'What Mortgage' (Dec. 2000) and 'Mortgage Magazine' (Jan. 2001) were examined.

A4.2 Through these methods it was discovered that some lenders who were not members of the CML were instead, subscribers to the 'Mortgage Code' and thereby registered with the Mortgage Code Compliance Board (MCCB). A list of those lenders subscribing to this was then obtained from www.mortgagecode.org.uk .

1. Lenders are listed alphabetically and the % column is formatted to 4 decimal places to allow the % for single entries to show greater than zero.

2. Discount standard securities under the right to buy scheme have been removed.

3. Standard securities in favour of 'obvious' government entities have been removed, eg: Scottish Ministers, Scottish Enterprise etc.

A4.9 An approach which was considered as another possible guide to the CML members active in Scotland is that there are currently 46 lending institutions in Scotland who have adopted the 'CML Lenders' Handbook for Scotland' (http://www.cml.org.uk /). However, again this could not be considered as comprehensive as other CML lenders also do lend in Scotland, even though their principal lending business may be elsewhere.
