Indicators of progress: Definitions, data, baseline and trends information

Milestone 26: Reducing crime rates in disadvantaged areas

Indicator

This milestone is currently measured by three indicators taken from the Central recorded crime statistical collection. The information records those crimes reported and then recorded by the Police.

Availability of data

It is recognised that the current data source is insufficient to measure the crime rates in disadvantaged areas. The Scottish Executive is considering how best to produce more relevant information. Consultants are currently investigating the feasibility of the recording and collection of crime data at postcode level. A report is expected in October 2002. In addition, the introduction of the Community Safety Partnership Programme has had a positive impact on progressing the collection of postcode level crime data by the Police Service in Scotland.

Recorded crime

The information available shows that across Scotland, the Total number of crimes per 10,000 people fell from 851 in 1991 to 823 in 2001.
