Glasgow and Clyde Valley (Vincent Goodstadt) | Detailed analysis of housing market areas based on Sasines data starting from 63 audit areas in GCVSPA. This identified that the GCVSPA operates at three HMA levels: 1. A conurbation market plus discrete markets for Dumbarton, Vale of Leven and Inverclyde, 2. A central and eastern conurbation sub-markets. 3. 11 separate sub-markets of which 7 are in the dentral conurbation and 4 within the eastern conurbation. | A household shopping survey was undertaken in April 1998. This allowed retail catchment areas to be analysed and plotted for comparison and convenience shopping. | 1991 census data still the main data source but the 1997 business survey identified access to suitable staff as a less important issue for large firms than it had been in a similar survey in 1991. | Cross boundary working should consider river basin management issues. |
Dundee and Angus (Gordon Piper) | The Fife structure plan is complementary with the Dundee and Angus plan but if it were not then the influence of towns in north Fife on the Dundee housing market would be very much greater. | Separate retail studies have been carried out in Dundee and Angus. There are local issues separate from the national planning perspective. The local studies test qualitative perspectives to see if they are reflected in the data. | Perth and Kinross, and North Fife are important for the Dundee TTWA but the closest interdependencies are between Dundee and Angus. There are therefore different tiers needed for cross boundary co-operation. | A clear structure is needed for planning to ensure that neighbouring Councils reach an agreed position. This involves a definition of the issues and their relevance at a defined geographical scale. |
North East Scotland Together (Drew Balfour) | | Joint shopping studies were undertaken to identify the different markets served by Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. | | It is important to start by agreeing what are the cross boundary issues and to leave all other issues to local planning. This then sets planning framework that is understood by all and allows a focus on only relevant issues. |
