Scottish Community Care Statistics 2001

Residential Care Homes

Tables 1.12 to 1.20 contain information on private and voluntary residential care homes registered with social work registration and inspection units and local authority run residential care homes. Tables in this chapter cover residential homes primarily intended for older people; homes for other client groups are included in chapters 2-5. For definitions on which the data are collected, please refer to the notes in annex A.

In 1998 a new methodology was introduced for dealing with non-response. Care should be taken when comparing time series data before and after 1998 as the figures may not be directly comparable. Please refer to annex A for more details.

In 1980 the figures for the private and voluntary sectors are grouped together.

Source: SEHD Community Care Statistics - R1 Return

Table 1.12 provides a breakdown of the number of residential care homes, beds and residents over time, split by sector.

The number of beds available has increased since 1980; but more recently it has been steadily decreasing. There were 15,150 beds available in 2001.

As is apparent from chart 1.3, the proportion of residential care beds in the local authority sector has been decreasing since 1990, whilst the number in the private and voluntary sectors has been on the increase.
