Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy and Scottish Action Plan

photoMinisterial foreword

Resistance to antimicrobial agents is a universal problem which needs to be tackled by comprehensive action.

This UK Strategy and Scottish Action Plan recognise the need for a wide range of activities if we are to tackle effectively this growing danger to public health. It recognises, too, the vital contribution which so many people and organisations can make, from health professionals to each of us as individuals. The Strategy, which has been developed on a UK basis, but with a distinctive Action Plan for Scotland, will, I am confident, lead to sustained action to combat the problem.

The Scottish Action Plan has been worked up with bodies operating in this important field in Scotland and seeks to focus activity in a way which allows the aims of the Strategy to be taken forward within the Scottish context.

Our approach to tackling the resistance of microbes must be as effective and dynamic as the power of these tiny organisms.

I therefore welcome this Strategy and Action Plan, setting the scene for action over the next three years and laying the basis for a sustained long-term programme of work which will be kept under review and refined in the light of new developments.

Malcolm Chisholm MSP
Minister for Health and Community Care
