Scotland's Native Trees and Shrubs
National Plant Specification
Founded in 1899, the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) is dedicated to improving the service provided by the horticultural industry. In 1997, in association with the Joint Council for Landscape Industries, the HTA compiled the 'National Plant Specification'. This specification provides a basis for conformity and the guarantee of good quality plant material. It has its critics in relation to some detail, particularly in relation to provenance and the shoot to root ratio illustrated in the Specification. Nevertheless, it is an important vehicle to aid the delivery of reliable quality stock throughout the industry. In 2000, the HTA introduced a Nursery Certification Scheme supported by leading growers of native stock in the UK. Growers who wish to make use of the Nursery Certification Scheme must guarantee to produce stock that complies with the National Plant Specification and comply with latest best practice guidance on plant handling. The HTA inspect and audit members' performance to ensure compliance with the agreement.
Growers who are members of the HTA and subscribe to the Nursery Certification Scheme should consequently be reliable suppliers of native stock. If not, the HTA will wish to know about it!
