Scotland's Native Trees and Shrubs
Making it work together
Establishing trust and a better understanding between landscape designers, buyers and traders of trees must be a priority for positive action. To achieve this, all sectors of the industry need to communicate more readily. Designers need to visit nurseries to check stock availability, to assess relative quality and develop a deeper understanding of the production process. Similarly growers need to talk to designers, contractors and clients to understand their priorities and problems.
Nurserymen understand how to grow plants. Their livelihood depends upon it. They are only too keen to share their knowledge with designers and contractors - ' in this area larch must be planted in November'. A nursery visit is a good investment.

Making it work together - Scottish Executive landscape advisors are working with nurserymen to develop new products based on natural characteristics. Trees grown in 'deep-root' pots have a more natural shoot to root ratio. Natural associations of plants can be grown together as one unit. Perhaps growing holly in a multiple species unit will improve its transplanting success rate and subsequent long-term performance?
