Scotland's Native Trees and Shrubs
Use natural characteristics
'The most stable and diverse plant communities in any given area are those native communities that have naturally adapted to the areas over an extended period of time'
Odum 1971.
Natural characteristics are inherently efficient in terms of the design of sustainable landscape. The skill required by the landscape designer is to recognise useful natural characteristics and learn more about how they can be used to achieve design objectives. Natural colonisation is one such characteristic.

Natural, diverse plant communities can be found in the woodland understorey.
