Scotland's Native Trees and Shrubs

Landscape and cultural identity

Research into the relationship between cultural identity and landscape suggests that landscape is a factor in the creation of a national identity. Such research includes the work by Adrian Philips ('The Nature of Cultural Landscapes - a nature conservation perspective') which explores the reasons for the growing interest in cultural landscapes. He argues that our culture has influenced the development of our landscape and that this meeting of society and environment has moulded the way each generation has sought to change the landscape. As the current trend for planting native trees and shrubs grows, it could indicate to future generations our growing awareness and understanding of the ecological benefits of 'going native'.
