Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria) in Inland Waters: Assessment and Control of Risks to Public Health

Foreword

Clean air and pure water are cornerstones of public health and Scotland is blessed with both. However, we can never forget that the quality of these vital commodities is under constant pressure from the consequences of our modern way of life. It is vital, therefore, that the various agencies responsible for air and water quality in Scotland work together to maintain the highest possible standards.

This document provides an excellent example of joint working of this type. Expertise in the areas of environment protection, public health, drinking water quality, toxicology and ecology has been pooled to produce comprehensive guidance on management of the risk from blue-green algae in inland Scottish waters. This guidance is intended as a resource that will help NHS Boards in Scotland to co-ordinate further joint working among local agencies towards production of local action plans.

I am grateful, therefore, for the opportunity to introduce and commend this document and to thank the members of the Working Group for their efforts in its compilation. Publication represents a further advance in arrangements to protect public health and natural resources.
