DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: FINDINGS FROM THE 2000 SCOTTISH CRIME SURVEY

CHAPTER FOUR: TRENDS IN PREVALENCE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE 1995-1999

Comparing 16 findings from the 2000 survey with those collected in 1996 suggests little change in the levels of domestic violence between 1995 and 1999. In 1995, 5% of respondents had experienced threats or force, compared with 4% in 1999. Women consistently reported higher levels of victimisation from partners and ex-partners than men. For example, in 1995, 6% of female respondents and 4% of male respondents had been the victim of either threats or force, compared with 6% and 3% respectively in 1999.

Incidents of threats and force ever shows little change between surveys. In 1995, 17% of women and 9% of men reported experiencing either threats or force at some time, while in 1999 18% of women and 7% of men reported ever having experienced threats or force.
