Notes:
(1) Figures refer to the last Friday of each month.
(2) Those identified by Employment Service (ES) as having joined New Deal, including those who have received an initial invitation, but have not yet attended their first interview.
(3) Those who have left during Gateway either to go into an unsubsidised job or for some other reason; plus those who have left an option without returning to ES.
(4) Totals include those for whom gender is not recorded. For this reason, and also because of rounding, components will not necessarily sum to totals.
(5) Those recorded by ES as having a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term effect on their ability to carry out normal day to day activities.
(6) Excluding those who, when asked their ethnic origin, were recorded as 'Prefer not to say'. Note that ethnic origin data is less complete for those who leave New Deal very soon after joining. As a result, the number of leavers from ethnic minorities is somewhat understated, particularly for January to March 1998.
