Ownership of vacant and derelict land
3.1 Table 5 shows ownership of vacant and derelict sites, including a comparison of data from 1996 and 2001. For those sites where ownership was known, private ownership represents the most significant category of vacant land (50 per cent): the figure is higher for derelict land (72 per cent in 2001, compared with 62 per cent in 1996). In 2001, 8 per cent of vacant or derelict land where ownership was known was in multiple ownership. 2,201 hectares of land (21 per cent of the total amount of vacant and derelict land recorded in 2001) had one or more unknown owners. The decrease in the amount of land recorded in the survey between 1996 and 2001 can partly be attributed to land being removed from the survey for definitional reasons.
