| This bulletin reports on the various social inclusion research projects commissioned by The Scottish Office. It aims to provide information on the research to all those with an interest in social inclusion issues. The bulletin provides summaries of ongoing research projects as well as new research that it is intended to commission over the coming year. Details are also given of recent and forthcoming publications related to social inclusion. |
| A significant number of the research projects identified in this bulletin have been commissioned to support the work of The Scottish Office Area Regeneration and Social Inclusion divisions. The focus of the projects largely reflects the Government's priorities for dealing with social inclusion as set out in 'Social Inclusion: Opening the door to a better Scotland' - the Scottish Social Inclusion Strategy. These projects, which are funded by the Development Department research vote, are developed in consultation with other Scottish Office research programmes and the research programmes of other organisations such as Scottish Homes, Scottish Enterprise and DETR, the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. Recent studies have concentrated on improving our understanding of the issue and how best to tackle social exclusion, whilst future work will focus on looking at ways of promoting social inclusion through programmes such as the Social Inclusion Partnerships and the Working for Communities and Listening to Communities initiatives. |
| Other research programmes within The Scottish Office have also commissioned research which focus on social inclusion and this bulletin pulls together such projects from Criminal Justice, Education, Housing, Local Government, Rural Development, Social Work and Transport. The Scottish Office Central Research Unit, which manages policy research programmes on behalf of policy clients across the Scottish Office, works to promote effective co-ordination between interests within these cross-cutting research projects. |
| Published reports and research findings produced on Scottish Office commissioned projects are also available on The Scottish Office Website ( www.scotland.gov.uk). Information can be obtained on ongoing projects from the project manager contact listed and more general information about any of the Scottish Office research programmes identified can be obtained from The Scottish Office Central Research Unit contacts which are listed on the back page. |
