French say ‘oui’ to Scottish grub

29/12/2012

France – a nation with a worldwide reputation for fine food – is the top destination for Scottish food exports according to the latest figures.

France tops the league tables for both Scottish food exports, and food and drink combined. Food exports alone were worth £257 million for the year ending September 2012.

Meanwhile, the top export destination for drink was the USA with exports worth £478 million for the same period.

In total, food and drink exports totalled £5.26 billion, up £66 million (one per cent) on the previous year.

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said:

“Thanks to our wonderful natural larder, Scottish produce is to be found in some of the world’s best restaurants and on the finest dining tables. Both at home and abroad, chefs and food connoisseurs appreciate the high quality of Scottish food and drink – whether that’s our Scotch beef, haggis, dairy products or a single malt.

“With nations as diverse as France and Russia enjoying Scottish food, it’s clear that there is an appetite for our produce which stretches far beyond our borders.

“Food and drink exports in the past year alone were worth an impressive £5.26 billion, and made a significant contribution to our economy during a challenging economic time.

“But we’re not resting on our laurels. We’re working hard to build on existing markets and develop new ones. I recently led a successful trade mission to the Far East where Scottish produce was very well received and I look forward to seeing the results of this in future.”
