Key scottish safety camera statistics 2011

Scotland’s Chief Statistician today announced the release of Key Scottish Safety Camera Statistics 2011. This publication reports statistics relating to road traffic casualties and offences at safety camera sites (speed cameras and red-light cameras) in Scotland.

The main findings are: 

• The number of people killed and seriously injured at safety camera sites each year is around 68% lower following a period of camera enforcement than in the period prior to safety camera enforcement.
• The number of personal injury accidents at safety camera sites per year is around 48% lower following a period of camera enforcement than in the period prior to safety camera enforcement.

• In recent years the number of speed and red-light offences caught on camera has reduced year-on-year. In the financial year 2005-06 over 127,000 people were issued with a Conditional Offer of a Fixed Penalty Notice as a result of offences caught on safety cameras; despite increases from last year attributed to enforcement of temporary speed limits at roadworks on major trunk roads and new digital red light camers giving greater coverage at existing sites, in 2010-11 this figure was less than 73,000.

• Eighty two per cent (82%) of people responding to the Scottish Crime and Justice Survey 2010-11 agree that people should see the use of safety cameras as a good thing.
