Scotland's Chief Statistician and the contributing criminal justice organisations today jointly released Official Statistics on the performance of the criminal justice system as part of the Summary Justice Reform Monitoring & Evaluation project.
Summary Justice Reform - Key Performance Data
This release provides information on four indicators which have been identified as key stages of the criminal justice system.
- the percentage of accused whose cases are dealt with within 26 weeks (caution and charge to verdict) was 74.7% between October and December 2011 and 73.0% between January and March 2012.
- the percentage of cases received by Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) within 28 days of earliest caution and charge was 86.0% between October and December 2011 and 88.8% between January and March 2012.
- the percentage of cases of individual accused persons in which a prosecution decision was taken and implemented within 4 weeks of the date of receipt of the report was 81.4% between October and December 2011 and 83.5% between January and March 2012.
- the percentage of accused whose summary criminal cases were disposed of within 20 weeks (first calling to sentence) was 78.3% between October and December 2011 and 76.1% between January and March 2012.
Summary Justice Reform Performance Report: April 2010 - March 2012
This release contains more detailed information about aspects of summary criminal justice system performance. The key findings between October 2011 and March 2012 are:
- 119,064 police reports were submitted to COPFS compared with 111,971 between October 2010 and March 2011, an increase of 6%.
- 24,696 Police Direct Measures were issued compared with 22,353 between October 2010 and March 2011, an increase of 9%.
- 62,252 cases were dealt with by direct measures by Procurators Fiscal compared with 53,505 between October 2010 and March 2011, an increase of over 16%.
- the percentage of accused in summary criminal cases pleading guilty at first calling was 34%, compared with 33% between October 2010 and March 2011.
