Racist incidents statistics 2010-11

Scotland’s Chief Statistician today published Racist Incidents Recorded by the Police in Scotland, 2010-11. This publication presents the latest figures on racist incidents recorded by Scottish police forces.

The main findings are:

  • The number of racist incidents recorded by the police in Scotland has shown a reduction for the fourth consecutive year, with 4,907 incidents recorded in 2010-11.
  • The number of racist incidents recorded in 2010-11 was eight per cent lower than the 5,322 incidents recorded in 2006-07, and one per cent lower than the 4,960 incidents recorded in 2009-10.
  • There were 6,169 crimes recorded as part of a racist incident in 2010-11, a reduction for the third consecutive year and is now at its lowest level since 2004-05.
  • In 2010-11, where ethnic origin of the victim was known, 24 per cent of victims were Pakistani, while 46 per cent of victims were of Asian origin (which includes Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese or other Asian).
  • In 2010-11, 46 per cent of perpetrators of racist incidents were aged 20 or under (where age and gender was known).
