College students

An additional £2.7 million has been allocated to the college student support budget, the Scopttish Funding Council (SFC) confirmed today.

The funding can be put back into the system for 2011-12 following underspends and colleges relinquishing funds in recent academic years.

Youth Employment Minister Angela Constance said:

"I am very pleased to see that student support for this academic year has been enhanced by such a significant amount in such a difficult economic climate, and that SFC continues to meet demand where it's needed.

"The Scottish Government is committed to ensuring a college place is a viable option for our young people and have guaranteed that every 16-19 year old will have a place, or one in training, through Opportunities for All.

"Alongside my appointment as a dedicated Minister for Youth Employment earlier this week, an additional £30 million has been announced to tackle youth unemployment, plus a further £15 million college transformation fund to support regional mergers of colleges, in line with our post-16 reform agenda. I expect to be able to talk in greater detail about how this funding will be allocated shortly."
