Winter salt stocks
14/01/2011
The North East is taking the necessary steps to deal with the rest of winter, Transport Minister Keith Brown said as further salt deliveries were expected in the region this week.
Around 4,000 tonnes of salt have been delivered to Balmedie this week with further deliveries of around 8000 tonnes due to be delivered over the next two weeks bringing the total stock at this location up to 12,000 tonnes. The new stock will be held for use by roads authorities in the area.
Transport Minister Keith Brown said:
"Last December we faced the second coldest month since records began, and we remain prepared as these salt deliveries this week demonstrate.
"Across Scotland we have almost 506,300 tonnes in stock and on order, compared to the 417,000 tonnes used for the three months up to the end of December.
"We are therefore confident that our resilience planning will ensure that we get through the winter together, by doing everything we can to minimise disruption to keep the north east moving."
While the Scottish Government is doing all it can to keep Scotland moving, drivers and passengers are urged to play their part by making informed travel choices. Real time journey planning information can be found on the Traffic Scotland and Travelline Scotland websites.
