Influenza A H1N1 update

06/07/2009

Scotland today had 52 new laboratory confirmed cases of Influenza A H1N1 taking the total number of confirmed cases to 1,377.

The new cases cover the period from Friday, July 3. Eight of them are travel-related, while 44 have no connection with travel.

The latest cases are in the following health board areas and show the daily figures for Saturday, Sunday and Monday respectively:

Greater Glasgow and Clyde (7, 20, 0)

Lanarkshire (1, 4, 0)

Grampian (3, 1, 0)

Dumfries (3, 0, 0)

Fife, (0, 0, 4)

Ayrshire and Arran (1, 1, 0)

Lothian (0, 1, 1)

Tayside (total four - daily breakdown unspecified) Orkney (0, 1, 0)

There are currently seven people in hospital with H1N1 receiving hospital treatment.

From today, the Scottish Government will move to a weekly update of:

The number of cases reporting to their doctor with flu like symptoms, broken down by area; a percentage of those who actually have H1N1 established through random sampling; and the numbers of hospitalised cases and deaths.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said:

"It remains the case that, in the majority of confirmed H1N1 cases to date, the symptoms have been mild and recovery straightforward.

"We have moved from a containment strategy into the early stages of the treatment phase - but, let me reassure everyone, this does not mean the severity of the virus has increased.

"Over the coming weeks, we will change the way we monitor the pandemic flu and its spread. This will ensure that our preparations and readiness for any potential future changes in either the virus, or its spread, are always well advanced as we look towards the rollout of a vaccine.

"In the meantime, I would urge everyone to continue to use simply hygiene methods such as regular hand washing and use of tissues when sneezing or coughing to help limit any unnecessary spread."
