Scottish Manufactured Exports Estimates, Quarter 1 2009

Scotland's Chief Statistician today announced the release of the Scottish Manufactured Exports Estimates for the first quarter of 2009.
This quarterly publication measures growth, in real terms, of overseas exports by manufacturing companies located in Scotland.
The main findings are:
- There was a fall of 3.4 per cent in the level of Scottish manufactured export sales in the first quarter of 2009 (seasonally adjusted). The level of Scottish manufactured export sales decreased by 6.5 per cent in real terms over the year to 2009 Q1
- Over the quarter the greatest declines were observed in engineering & allied industries (-5.1 per cent), metals & metal products (-6.5 per cent), chemicals, coke, refined petroleum & nuclear fuel (-6.5 per cent), textiles, fur & leather (-12.7 per cent), wood, paper, publishing & printing (-7.0 per cent), and other manufacturing (-10.1 per cent). In the same period, growth in exports were observed in the food, drink & tobacco industries (+5.2 per cent)
- Over the year to March 2009 export sales fell in engineering & allied industries (-7.5 per cent), food, drink & tobacco (-6.2 per cent), metals & metal products (-12.3 per cent), textiles, fur & leather (-12.5 per cent), chemicals, coke, refined petroleum & nuclear fuel (-3.3 per cent), and wood, paper, publishing & printing (-4.1 per cent). However, export sales in the other manufacturing industries grew by 3.2 per cent in real terms over the year
