Business Enterprise Research and Development Scotland 2007

Scotland's Chief Statistician today released Business Enterprise Research and Development (BERD) Scotland 2007.
The publication includes the latest statistics to 2007 on Business R&D activity in Scotland. Regional and international comparisons are included, as are statistics by product group, size of business, source of funding and ownership. Statistics are also provided for Gross Expenditure on R&D (GERD), which comprises that undertaken by business, government and the higher education sectors.
The main findings are:
Business Enterprise R&D (BERD)
- BERD expenditure in Scotland was £513 million in 2007, 3.2 per cent of the UK figure and an increase of £52 million since 2006. This represents a real terms increase of 8.3 per cent since 2006
- BERD expenditure was 0.46 per cent of Scottish GDP in 2007, compared to 1.13 per cent for the UK, 1.12 per cent for the EU and 1.59 per cent for the OECD
Gross Expenditure on R&D (GERD)
- GERD in Scotland was £1,710 million in 2007, 6.7 per cent of the UK total and an increase of £189 million since 2006
- GERD was 1.52 per cent of Scottish GDP in 2007, compared to 1.79 per cent for the UK, 1.77 per cent for the EU and 2.29 per cent for the OECD
Higher Education R&D (HERD)
- HERD expenditure in Scotland was £870 million in 2007, 13.4 per cent of the UK figure and an increase of £98 million since 2006
- HERD expenditure was 0.78 per cent of Scottish GDP in 2007, compared to 0.46 per cent for the UK, 0.39 per cent for the EU and 0.38 per cent for the OECD
Government R&D (GoveRD)
- GoveRD expenditure in Scotland was £327 million in 2007, 14.6 per cent of the UK figure and an increase of £39 million since 2006
- GoveRD expenditure was 0.29 per cent of Scottish GDP in 2007. In comparison to other regions within the UK, Scotland ranks third in terms of government R&D expenditure as a percentage of GDP
This publication presents the most recent data for Business Enterprise R&D (BERD) and Gross Expenditure on R&D (GERD) in 2007. The BERD figures for 2001 to 2006 have been revised and as a consequence the GERD figures for this period have also been revised.
GERD forms the basis of the National Indicator: At least halve the gap in total research and development spending compared with EU average by 2011.
