24/06/2009

There were a further 53 laboratory confirmed cases of the influenza A (H1N1) virus in Scotland today, taking the total number of confirmed cases across the country to 739.

The new cases are in Greater Glasgow & Clyde (47), Lanarkshire (2), Forth Valley (1), Highland (1), Lothian (1) and Tayside (1).

Of today's cases, only one is related to travel with the other 52 non-travel related.

Four people confirmed with the influenza A (H1N1) virus are currently being treated in hospital.

In addition, NHS Lanarkshire has confirmed that the Primary Two class at St Helen's Primary School, Condorrat have been excluded following a risk assessment.

Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said:

"Today I can confirm a further 53 cases of the H1N1 virus in Scotland with the increase fitting the patterns of spread we, along with other health authorities elsewhere, expected to see.

"In the majority of the cases of confirmed H1N1 symptoms remain mild.

"We are doing everything we can to limit the spread of the outbreak and continue to fine tune our preparations and procedures going forward while continuing to work towards securing the necessary supplies of an H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available."
