Influenza A H1N1 update

22/06/2009

Scotland has 21 new laboratory confirmed cases of influenza A H1N1 today taking the country's total to 647.

The new cases are in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (20) and NHS Tayside (1).

In addition, there are two probable cases under investigation, both in NHS Lothian. One is travel related and the other is non travel-related.

There are currently four people with confirmed cases of Influenza A H1N1 being treated in hospital.

NHS Lanarkshire has today said that two pupils at St Helen's Primary School in Condorrat, Cumbernauld have been confirmed as positive cases.

Following a robust risk assessment by public health officials, it has been decided that the school will remain open and no other children will be excluded.

In addition, following confirmation of a positive case at Rhu Primary School in Argyll, a Primary Five class has been issued with Tamiflu but children who are well have been allowed to stay at school.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "Scotland has a number of new laboratory confirmed cases of H1N1 today and this should not surprise us.

"We and our colleagues in NHS boards across Scotland are working to identify and confirm new cases quickly and this is helping us to map the spread of the virus.

"Our meticulous tracking will be of immense benefit to scientists around the world as we monitor the pandemic and work towards developing a vaccine for the virus.

"I would like to stress that the vast majority of people are experiencing mild symptoms that are not causing clinical concern."
