Culture Minister Michael Russell today announced appointment of three new members - Andrew Holmes, Dr Isabel Bruce and Dr Anna Gregor, re-appointment of Prof Malcolm McLeod and Prof Stuart Monro, and extension of appointment of James Fiddes to the Board of Trustees of National Museums Scotland.

Andrew Holmes trained as a civil engineer and has held posts in Scottish local government. He retired in 2008 from the post of Director of City Development with the City of Edinburgh Council and currently provides development advice to various bodies. He has been a board member of Council-owned property and regeneration committees. Andrew Holmes is a member of the board of the Hill-Adamson (Scottish National Photography Centre) project, a member of the Mobility and Access Committee for Scotland and is involved in economic development and tourism promotion in Perthshire.

Dr Isabel Bruce has extensive public sector experience in the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish Development Agency and Motherwell District Council. She led the design, funding, building and fit-out of the award winning Atlantic Quay building in Glasgow. She was a Board member of Hamilton Enterprise Development Company from 1995 to 1997, a Board observer for three of Scotland's Science Centres (in Aberdeen, Dundee and Glasgow) from 2005 to 2008 and currently at Our Dynamic Earth (since 2005). Dr Bruce was a Board member, then Chair, of Bell College from 1996 to 2007 and has been Vice-Chair of the University of the West of Scotland since 2007. She is currently a Board member of the Scotland Malawi Partnership (since 2005). She was awarded an OBE in the 2009 New Year honours list for services to higher education in Scotland and Malawi.

Dr Anna Gregor is a cancer doctor who has, for the last 10 years of her NHS career, led the development of a managed clinical network (SCAN) and, from 2001 to 2006, the development and implementation of the Scottish national strategy for cancer services. In both these roles she has been closely involved with development and implementation of quality assurance programmes such as the Clinical Standards Board for Scotland and national cancer audits. Dr Gregor has over 30 years experience as a clinical academic and researcher in the development and running of national and international trials, and as a teaching hospital R&D director. More recently she supports clinical leadership to the Scottish patients safety programme both within NHS Lothian and working with Quality Improvement Scotland.

These appointments are for four years and run from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2013.

The reappointed members:

Prof Malcolm McLeod was Vice-Principal of the University of Glasgow before retirement. Over 35 years he has gained extensive knowledge of the museums sector. He has been Chair of the Scottish Museums Council, Keeper of the Ethnography Department at the British Museum, and Director of the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery at the University of Glasgow. He continues to work on several projects in Ghana, where he set up a Museum for the Asante people in 1995.

Prof Stuart Monro is Scientific Director at Our Dynamic Earth and a leading practitioner in promoting science to a wide audience. He has over 30 years of scientific research experience with the British Geological Survey as a Principal Geologist. None of the appointees hold any other Scottish Ministerial appointments.

National Museums Scotland (NMS) is Scotland's national museums service. NMS is committed to enhancing public services and to making collections more widely accessible. It is currently undertaking a £46 million project to transform the Royal Museum by July 2011, integrating it with the modern architecture of the adjacent Museum of Scotland, to become a world-class museum complex known simply as the National Museum of Scotland. This will enable NMS to present a breadth and depth of collections rivalling most national museums in Europe.

These Ministerial public appointments were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. None of the appointees declared any political activity in the last five years.
