Funding to tackle homelessness
23/12/2008
Twenty nine projects will receive £2.4 million from the Scottish Government to help tackle homelessness and provide debt advice, Communities Minister Stewart Maxwell announced today.
The Housing Voluntary Sector Grants Scheme provides funding for innovative projects relating to homelessness and other housing issues, including repossession and debt advice.
In light of a likely increase in the use of their services in the current financial climate, Shelter Scotland will receive £231,108 to develop its housing law service, which includes advice for people facing repossession. It represents a 50 per cent increase on their allocation from last year.
Borderline, which offers support and advice to homeless Scots in London, it has been awarded £107,100. Based in Victoria near the coach station, the route many Scots take to London, Borderline's team of five staff offers a range of services including information, advice and advocacy.
Scottish Women's Aid will receive £107,100 to provide advice and support to women who are homeless having suffered domestic abuse.
Mr Maxwell said:
"Homelessness blights our society and is at odds with our ambition to build a modern, successful Scottish economy.
"That's why we are backing all these projects with significant investment to help improve the lives of people who are homeless or facing the risk of losing their home.
"Everyone should have the opportunity to have a settled home, a base for themselves and their family.
Alison Watson, Head of Services, Shelter Scotland, housing and homelessness charity said:
"Given the extra pressures on individuals and families across Scotland, this additional funding will enable us to respond to the very real problems people are facing.
