Police appointment

19/12/2008

Bill Skelly has been appointed as the Assistant Chief Inspector of Constabulary for Scotland.

Mr Skelly will take up the post, a two year secondment from Lothian and Borders Police, on temporary promotion to Deputy Chief Constable.

Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary Paddy Tomkins said:

"I believe Mr Skelly has the skills, in terms of operational policing knowledge and strategic management, to assist me in leading the Inspectorate of Constabulary and helping to improve the Police Service across Scotland.

"This is a challenging period for the Inspectorate of Constabulary, as we finalise our review of policing for the Justice Secretary and continue with our programme of thematic Inspections. That's why I'm pleased to have Mr Skelly on board and ready to help drive HMICS forward."

Bill Skelly is currently Assistant Chief Constable of Lothian and Borders Police. He will take up the role of Assistant Inspector of Constabulary on temporary promotion to Deputy Chief Constable, following approval from the Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill.

He was recruited following open competition and interview.

Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary for Scotland (commonly known as the Police Inspectorate or HMICS) is responsible for inspecting the eight Scottish police forces and five police services. HMICS operates independently of the police forces, police authorities and the Scottish Government and exists to monitor and improve the police services in Scotland.
