sportscotland appointments

Minister for Communities and Sport Stewart Maxwell today announced the appointment of three new members to the sportscotland Board.
- Ms Frances Thin has many years experience of encouraging sport participation at community level in the Highlands. She has a particular interest in increasing activity amongst young people, and coaches local primary school children in cross-country and athletics. She has spent most of her professional career in public sector management and is currently completing an MBA at Robert Gordon University. Ms Thin enjoys running, mountain biking, cycle touring and hill walking. She does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
- Professor Grant Jarvie is Deputy Principal with the University of Stirling. He comes from an international sporting family, has extensive experience and understanding of sport and education both nationally and internationally and is a passionate advocate of the power of education and sport to make a difference not just in local communities but through international development work. He has held established chairs in two of Scotland's Universities, is a registered teacher, advisor to the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame, has chaired area institutes of sport, is an Honorary Professor with the University of Warsaw and has been central to the development and recognition of Stirling as Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence. He has previously advised on the measurement of costs and activity in Higher and Further Education and currently sits on the Cabinet Secretary for education and lifelong learning implementation group for the Curriculum for Excellence. He does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
- Mr Mel Young is the President and co-founder of the Homeless World Cup, an organization established to use sport as a mechanism to create change. He is a globally recognized social entrepreneur who co-founded The Big Issue in Scotland in 1993, the International Network of Street Papers (INSP) in 1995 and Social Entrepreneurs Network Scotland (Senscot) in 1999. He does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
These appointments will be for a period of four years from December 1, 2008 to November 30, 2012.
These posts are part-time with a firm commitment to attending and contributing to 6-8 Board meetings per year, which occasionally may involve some work during the evenings and weekends. These posts are not remunerated.
sportscotland is the national agency for developing sport in Scotland, dedicated to helping increase participation and improve performance in sport. The organisation work with and bring together key organisations in Scottish sport, such as Governing Bodies and Local Authorities, supporting them in delivering their single plan for sport and investing National Lottery and Scottish Government funding in the shared outcomes which contribute to the National Strategy for Sport - Reaching Higher.
These Ministerial appointments were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's (OCPAS) Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. None of the above appointees have been involved in any political activity within the last five years.
