Registered Blind and Partially Sighted Persons Scotland 2008

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published Registered Blind and Partially Sighted Persons, Scotland 2008. This statistics release presents information on the number of blind and partially sighted people who are registered with Local Authorities in Scotland.

Some of the notable statistics included in the report are:

  • In 2008, the number of people registered as blind or partially sighted was estimated to be just over 35,900, a very slight increase on 2007.
  • There were over 3,100 new cases registered as blind or partially sighted during the year to 31st March 2008, a decrease of 4.6 per cent on 2007.
  • 56 per cent of people on the register were blind and 44 per cent were partially sighted.
  • The majority of people, 62 per cent of those on the register were female. However for those aged under 75 the gender split is more even.
  • Over three-quarters of those registered were over the age of 65.
  • Nearly a third of those registered as visually impaired had additional disabilities. Of these roughly a quarter (nearly 2,700 people) were deaf.
