Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council

Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hyslop, today announced the appointment of a new member to the Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council and the re-appointment of two existing members.
The new member is Alison Jarvis, while the members being re-appointed are Peter Holmes and Alan Tripp.
Ms Hyslop said:
"I am delighted to announce the appointment of Alison Jarvis to the Council. Alison's in-depth understanding of equality and diversity issues will be invaluable to the Council as it develops its thinking to meet the challenges ahead.
"I am also pleased that Peter Holmes and Alan Tripp have agreed to continue in their roles bringing sound and constructive advice to the Council's work."
Alison Jarvis is a freelance consultant and coach specialising in leadership, strategic change management and equality with organisations in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Until Autumn 2007 she was Director of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in Scotland responsible for delivering a strategic approach to racial equality in policy development, the law and public education programmes.
Before joining the CRE, Alison was Director of Stonewall in Scotland working on legal equality and social justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Alison was directly engaged with the process of developing the UK Equality and Human Rights Commission in the four years leading up to its opening in 2007 and has been involved in many other cross-Equalities Groups and initiatives in the UK and internationally to ensure that joined up approaches are used to advance a fairer society. Alison is also one of the recently recruited assessors who work for the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland.
The appointment, which is part-time, is for a four year term effective from November 17, 2008 until November 16, 2012. The remuneration is £11,124 a year for a time commitment of three days per month.
Peter Holmes served as a Vice-Principal at the University of Glasgow from 1997 until 2006 and as Pro Vice-Principal from 2006 until 2008. One of his main responsibilities as Vice-Principal was the development and implementation of the University's Research Strategy. He is Emeritus Professor of Veterinary Physiology and an internationally recognised veterinary scientist.
Alan Tripp has had a career encompassing the roles of accountant, financial controller, company secretary and managing director within several major companies. Prior to taking early retirement in 2000 he was Senior Vice-President and Managing Director of Global CPS Operation at Sykes Enterprises Inc.
Peter Holmes has been re-appointed for a two year term effective from October 3, 2008 to October 2, 2010. Alan Tripp has been re-appointed for a one year term effective from October 3, 2008 to October 2, 2009. The remuneration is £11,124 a year for a time commitment of three days per month.
None of the appointees hold any other Ministerial public appointments.
The Scottish Further and Higher Education Funding Council was established on October 3, 2005 under the provisions of the Further and Higher Education (Scotland) Act 2005. All appointments to the Council are based on this legislation. The Council is responsible for providing funding for learning and teaching, research and other relevant activities in Scotland's colleges and higher education institutions (HEIs).
These Ministerial public appointments were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. All appointees declared no political activity within the last five years.
