Research award for IBM

Computer company IBM has been awarded a grant of £1 million to carry out research into the development of new software.
Enterprise Minister Jim Mather announced the Scottish Enterprise funding today during a visit to the company's Greenock premises.
The Minister said that investing in innovation, research and development was an important way in which the Government could help the Scottish economy weather the difficulties caused by a global downturn.
Mr Mather said:
"With a 57-year history in Scotland and almost 2,000 employees based in Greenock, IBM has a significant presence in the Scottish economy.
"This award from Scottish Enterprise will enable IBM's skilled Scottish staff to spearhead the development of new, cutting-edge software.
"The company has undertaken a major refurbishment of its premises and is benefiting from Regional Selective Assistance which helps safeguard jobs.
"Every extra pound spent in Scotland's economy could protect a job or save a business in the current climate.
"Scotland has real strengths in innovative research and development and the general R&D grant encourages investment in new ventures, which at this present time will help to position Scotland for a faster and stronger recovery.
"Creating a more competitive business environment by increasing sustainable economic growth is the Scottish Government's top priority - and it has been since our first day in power.
"That's why awards of this kind are so important in helping us build on the Scottish Government's six point economic recovery plan to help both householders and businesses during the slowdown."
Jack Perry, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise, said:
"IBM's decision to invest in R&D activity in Scotland is a clear indication of how Scotland and its assets, such as a highly skilled workforce and business infrastructure, are regarded. We are delighted that IBM sees the clear benefits of R&D, especially given the challenges of the current business environment."
The general R&D grant, administered by Scottish Enterprise, provides support for innovative projects across Scotland. Three existing grant schemes have been consolidated into one general R&D grant to simplify the process of securing Government support for research and development. Applications for innovative developments at any level are open to small, medium and large businesses alike.
